ANKARA - Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer approved on Friday a draft law envisaging amendment to Environment Law.
The new law allows environmental authorities to issue a fine of 60,000 YTL for factories lacking or not operating their toxic waste filtering units. Those who pollute the soil by burying toxic waste could face a fine of 24,000 YTL.
Those who give wrong or misleading information will be sentenced up to 1 year in prison.
Everybody, mainly the chambers, associations and non-governmental organizations will be assigned to protect the environment and prevent environmental pollution.
Also under the law, those who manufacture, process, export, store and sell the toxic chemicals contrary to the laws should pay a fine of 1 million YTL.
Within the scope of the law, High Environment Committee will be established. The committee will convene at least once a year and determine targets, policies and strategy to ensure an influential environment administration.
