Türkiye expressed support for the peace accord brokered by the African Union between the Sudanese government and the Minnawi faction of the Sudan Liberation Army, signed in Abuja, Nigeria, on 5 May 2006.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry said it hopes the agreement will foster peace and stability in the Darfur region and contribute to Sudan's unity and development, as well as broader stability across Africa.
The ministry also called on other armed groups in the region to join the agreement.
Officials noted that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during a March visit to Sudan, had directed the Turkish Red Crescent (Kizilay) to build a field hospital in Darfur. Construction of that facility is ongoing.
The ministry added that a lasting peace settlement in Darfur would allow Türkiye to expand its humanitarian assistance to both Sudan and the Darfur region.
