19 Films to Compete for Palme d'Or at Cannes in May

The Cannes Film Festival will run 17–28 May this year, with 19 feature films vying for the top prize, the Palme d'Or.

The competition lineup spans more than a dozen countries. Entries include Pedro Almodóvar's 'Volver' (Spain), Sofia Coppola's 'Marie-Antoinette' (US), Ken Loach's 'The Wind That Shakes the Barley' (Britain), and Guillermo del Toro's 'Pan's Labyrinth' (Mexico). Türkiye is represented by Nuri Bilge Ceylan's 'Iklimler' (The Climates). Three French films also made the cut: 'Flandres' by Bruno Dumont, 'Selon Charlie' by Nicole Garcia, and 'Quand J'Etais Chanteur' by Xavier Giannoli.

Four films will screen out of competition. Ron Howard's 'The Da Vinci Code,' Brett Ratner's 'X-Men 3: The Last Stand,' and Paul Greengrass's 'United 93,' which dramatizes the fate of a hijacked aircraft on 11 September 2001, represent the US. France contributes 'Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait,' a documentary on soccer star Zinedine Zidane, directed by Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno.
