WASHINGTON - White House press secretary Scott McClellan, President George W. Bush`s chief spokesman, announced his resignation Wednesday, amid a continuing shake-up of the president`s senior advisers.
"I thank Scott for his service to our country," Bush told reporters outside the White House.
"I don`t know whether or not the press corps realizes it, but his is a challenging assignment dealing with you all on a regular basis, and I thought he handled his assignment with class, integrity," the president said.
"It`s going to be hard to replace Scott," Bush said, adding: "Nevertheless, he`s made the decision, and I accept it."
In brief remarks, McClellan thanked Bush for the "extraordinary honor and privilege" of having been his spokesman.
"The White House is going through a phase of transition -- a change can be helpful," McClellan said.
"I`ve given my all, and will continue to do so as we transition to a new press secretary over the next two to three weeks," he said.
There was no immediate word from the White House on McClellan`s successor.
