BAGHDAD - The brother of prominent Sunni Arab politician Tareq al-Hashemi was killed Thursday by unknown gunmen, along with one other person, sources in the police and a Sunni political party said.
Hashemi leads the Iraqi Islamic Party, the leading member of the Sunni National Concord Front coalition.
"Mahmud al-Hashemi was killed, along with a companion, in the Sanak neighborhood of central Baghdad by armed men inside a car," the security source said.
A source in the Islamic Party confirmed the death, adding that Hashemi was killed as he left his store selling auto parts.
