ROME - Opposition leader Romano Prodi has won Italy's general elections, defeating Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi in both houses of parliament, official results showed Tuesday.
Prodi's centre-left bloc took control of the Senate, the upper chamber which had been hanging in the balance. A full count had already shown him as the winner in the lower chamber.
Berlusconi, the flamboyant billionaire whose centre-right House of Freedoms alliance has governed Italy for five years, was due to give his first public reaction to the election later Tuesday.
