LUANDA - A cholera outbreak in the Angolan capital of Luanda has left 53 people dead over the last two months while more than 2,200 others have become ill, the World Health Organization said Wednesday.
The government declared a cholera outbreak in Luanda on February 19.
"Luanda has reported 2,275 cumulative cases and 53 deaths since the declaration of the cholera outbreak," the WHO office in Angola said in a statement.
The outbreak was detected in the Boavista shantytown near central Luanda and marked the first time in six years that health authorities had to grapple with the disease in the capital.
