EDIRNE - EU Commission's Representative to Turkey Hansjorg Kretschmer said that assistance which is provided to Turkey (by the EU) is just to support its accession to the EU.
Kretschmer met today Hamdi Sedefci, Mayor of northwestern city of Edirne, after participating to the opening of EU Information Office in Edirne.
Kretschmer said that the recent flood disaster in the region demonstrated the importance of the cooperation with neighboring countries.
He said that EU's financial assistance does not cover natural disasters and floods. He noted that as long as there is no project to prevent floods in Edirne, the EU cannot do anything, adding that they have not received any project yet.
On the other hand Sedefci said, ''Edirne is a bridge between Turkey and the EU as regards cross-border cooperation and joint projects.''
''The region has experiencing difficulties due to floods. We will develop a joint project with Bulgarian and Greek officials abut the issue,'' he said.
