ISTANBUL - A Turkish-Japanese consortium has started to build high-tech driverless rail transit system in Dubai.
The consortium of four companies, Turkish Yapi Center and Japanese Mitsubishi, Obayashi and Kajima, won the tender for 3.7 billion USD in 2005.
Yapi Center stated that first phase of Dubai Metro Project will be 52.6 kilometers in length and have 26 stations, and the second phase will be 17.5 kilometers in length and have 14 stations.
Dubai Metro will be the first rail system in Arabian peninsula.
The project will be constructed within a period of 55 months with phase one taking 49 months and phase two 35 months, finishing both in less than five years. The consortium will also carry out maintenance of the project for 15 years.
