ANKARA - Deniz Baykal, the leader of the Republican People's Party (CHP) said on Tuesday that his party from the beginning supported broadening of the democratic atmosphere, rights and freedoms.
Baykal added that yet these regulations should be made for the citizens of Turkey, not as they were wanted by the EU.
Referring to regulations prepared with the name of ''EU Sixth Adjustment Package'' in CHP parliamentary group meeting, Baykal said that various regulations were made regarding the EU both in the past and today.
Baykal said that negotiations with the EU for full membership should start in 2005. Noting that the calling of the regulation as ''EU Adjustment Package'' was not appropriate, Baykal said that ''this name causes complex, we must be clear and transparent in our attitude: We must do anything for ourselves. But we see that the government is always unreliable, hidden and ready to change in its attitudes any time.''
Baykal also criticized numbering the package, telling ''what does the sixth package mean? If we have the sixth package, we can have the seventh, eighth tomorrow... No body has the right to show as if Turkey has always shortcomings.''
Baykal stated that Turkey could give the right to broadcast in mother tongue, adding ''we can also give it, the whole world has given this right. Will we give it as EU wants it? No, the parliament, constitution and national will give this right.''
Baykal stated that the things that should be done about EU should be clarified as soon as possible, adding that the method of solving these issues in Italy, Greece, France should also be valid in Turkey.
