Acts Of Terrorism Reduced By 80 Percent When Compared To 1993

ANKARA - Security Deputy Director General and Security Directorate General Spokesman Feyzullah Arslan said on Friday that acts of terrorism reduced by eighty percent when compared to terrorist incidents ten years ago.
Holding a press conference, Arslan said that the decrease took place as a result of people's support to security forces' effective fight against terrorism.
''Under principles of law and understanding of human rights, the security organization will maintain its fight against terrorism which aims to destroy basic characteristics of the republic,'' he said.
Noting that the Anti-Terrorism Department was coordinating the fight against separatist leftist and fundamentalist terrorist organizations which posed serious threat to national unity and solidarity, basic characteristics of the republic and democratic, secular and social order of law, Arslan said that this department had ten thousand personnel.
''A total of 6,956 acts of terrorism happened in 1993; 6,596 in 1994; 4,561 in 1995; 4,424 in 1996; 2,815 in 1997; 2,578 in 1998; 3,242 in 1999; 1,757 in 2000; 1,602 in 2001; and 1,376 in 2002. Consequently, number of acts of terrorism throughout Turkey decreased by eighty percent when compared to 1993,'' he said.
