''TSK HAS PROMOTED ALL KINDS OF NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN TURKEY''
Bulent Ecevit, the leader of the Democratic Left Party (DSP) and former prime minister, said, ''some circles both in the United States and in the European Union (EU) have been trying to show the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) and even Mustafa Kemal Ataturk as main obstacles in front of Turkey's EU membership.'' Ecevit stressed that the TSK, in fact, had promoted all kinds of new developments in Turkey.

ANATOLIAN MOVEMENT AGAINST BAYKAL
Some members of the Republican People's Party (CHP), who are opposed to Deniz Baykal, have taken action under the name of ''Anatolian Movement''. They claimed that Baykal destroyed democracy within the CHP. They said that they aimed at restructuring the CHP.

ADVICES TO KINGS
Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said, ''regimes like kingdom and emirates in the Islam countries are an obstacle before development. These regimes have to change.'' Gul explained more openly his important call to Islam countries and said, ''the reason of underdevelopment in Islam countries is their regimes not being a Muslim country.'' Gul emphasized that Islam countries should replace their current regimes with democratic and modern regimes without any need for pressure. Gul said, ''the reason of the current situation of Islam countries is their regimes. The problem is the closed and untransparent administrative style which is generally based on dictatorship. My call to these countries is to change their regimes by their own leaders and administration. My call to them is to adopt democracy and ensure their people to join the administration.''

APPOINTMENT OF CERTAIN PERSONS TO CERTAIN POSITIONS BY ANNOUNCEMENT
When Taci Soysal, the chairman of the branch of Justice and Development Party (AK Party) in Bayramic town of western Canakkale province, made a statement on the municipality announcement office saying that ''those who wanted to work in the construction of Can Power Station should apply to AK Party town branch'', trouble broke out. Chairmen of other political parties evaluated the incident as ''the proof of appointment of certain persons to certain places.''

EXCHANGE RATE IS PRETEXT, AIM IS CONSUMPTION
The government has suggested the Central Bank for some time with a compelling style to reduce the overnight interest rates. Even if it is thought that the aim of the discussion is the wish for an increase in the exchange rate which is lower these days, the real aim is to revive the domestic demand.

SECOND INITIATIVE IN 'PETITION OF INTELLECTUALS'
The second petition of intellectuals including democratic requests will be submitted to President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Constitutional Court Chief Judge Mustafa Bumin later in the day. The six-page petition of democratic requests caused trial of famous writer Aziz Nesin and 56 intellectuals at the Martial Law Court in 1984.

PEARSON TAKES ACTION
U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Robert Pearson sent letters to U.S. firms and called on them to take part in the CeBit Informatics Fair to be held in Istanbul in September of 2003. Tension escalated in relations between Turkey and the United States during the Iraq war. However, the current atmosphere between the two countries has turned into a commercial cooperation for the fair. A number of U.S. firms are expected to take part in the fair as a result of initiatives of U.S. Ambassador Pearson.

IMF POLICY WEARS COUNTRY OUT
The Treasury seizes the profit of Turkish Petroleum Corp. (TPAO) which recorded a profit of 613 trillion Turkish liras (TL) before tax payment in 2001, in order to repay the debts. For this reason, the agency can't find source for investments and faces a difficult situation. The Supreme Board of Supervision (YDK) warned that if distortion in investments is not overcome, TPAO's domestic activities will be totally stopped in the following years.

''NO WORSHIP PLACE IN APARTMENT BUILDING''
Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul announced that they gave up the proposal to ''form places of worship in apartment buildings'' which was formerly included in the European Union (EU) reform package but caused reactions. Gul said that making propaganda other than Turkish was also considered inconvenient and excluded from the package.

''WE DO NOT GET PERMISSION OF NSC''
Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul said, ''we did not get permission of the National Security Council (NSC) about the sixth adjustment package with the European Union (EU).'' Speaking at a program on state-run TRT TV Channel, Gul said that a NSC meeting with a special agenda was out of question. ''Important issues on the agenda of our countries are taken up at the NSC meetings. However, one of the most important symbols of the EU is civil administration. No one should overshadow civil administration in Turkey,'' Gul added.

TEARGAS IN BEYOGLU
A group of members of Democratic People's Party (DEHAP), who attempted to make a press release in Beyoglu district of Istanbul with the request of general amnesty, was dispersed by police. Nearly 100 members of the DEHAP gathered in Beyoglu district and wanted to make a press release with the request of general amnesty and better conditions for Abdullah Ocalan, the head of terrorist organization PKK. Police intervened in the group with K-9 dogs and teargas. Some passersby were also affected from teargas.

''ENJOY YOURSELF ERA'' ENDS
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that they would launch initiatives to prevent the state from being an authority finding work to the unemployed and being a place where people gained money by resting. Erdogan responded to criticisms that the government had not dealt with corruption as it should have done and said, ''how can we ask for an explanation? They have found how to defend what they have done. Now, some people are saying that there is appointment of certain people to certain positions. Why are they uneasy? Because, we have made them uneasy. Because, they used to benefit from their places but they can't do it any more.'' Erdogan noted that they would prevent the state from being a place of employment and said, ''one mother comes and asks us to employ his son. We tell them to apply to the private sector. But, the mother says working in state institutions is different. Why is it different? Because, when you start working in state institutions, you start enjoying yourself and resting and continue getting your salary. But, in the private sector, there is not such thing. You only get your money when you work.''

DOLLAR DISCUSSION
State Minister Kursad Tuzmen said, ''our duty is becoming difficult with this exchange rate. We are missing the opportunities. We will face its problems later.''

EXCHANGE RATE CRITICISMS ON CENTRAL BANK INCREASING
The criticisms towards the foreign exchange policy of the Central Bank are increasing gradually. Following the statements of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Rifat Hisarciklioglu, the Chairman of the Union of Turkish Chambers and Commodity Exchanges (TOBB), State Minister Kursad Tuzmen and Turkish Exporters' Assembly Chairman Oguz Satici also made harsh criticisms.
