LEFKOSA - TRNC President Rauf Denktas said on Thursday that Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos's desire of returning back to the negotiations on the basis of Annan plan was not sincere and it was tactics.
Denktas said he hoped Papadopoulos to be sincere and to act realistically.
Underlining the fact that an agreement could be reached within the scope of a realistic approach, Denktas said that ''we prepared the basis of that and proved that. There is no meaning of putting forward other formulas depending on others.''
When a reporter asked his views about the wishes of Papadopoulos who wanted the full exercise of three freedoms (the right to freedom of movement, settlement and getting properties) and who wanted discussion of Annan plan, Denktas said that ''when we opened the doors, they use the tactics of bringing back to table Annan plan which they earlier disapproved. Nothing can be done by tactics. We wish sincerity.''
Denktas said that the regulation of these three freedoms was on the agenda and they were discussed and known since 1977, Denktas said that ''we always said that the right to freedom of movement could be exercised by mutually presenting a 'black list' but they didn't take it into consideration. Now we are implementing it. They didn't give us a 'black list,' but we have our own list and those who act against the laws within our borders are taken to this list.''
Denktas said that Greek Cypriots who entered TRNC today gave fake U.S. dollars and sterlings in return to their shopping in two-three shops in Girne, adding that those who got the fake money caught the persons, gave them back the fake money and received new ones. Denktas said that such incidents should be told to the police, calling people to be careful about fake money.
Stressing that the implementation of three freedoms without any restrictions would mean returning back to pre-1974 period, Denktas continued his words saying ''the negotiations were not held to this end. Negotiations were held to reach a bi-zonal, sound, lasting agreement. Greek Cypriots refrained from that. They always hoped to put forward formulas by the help of others, in order to turn to the pre-1974 period. Annan formula was one of them.''
Hoping Papadopoulos to be realistic, Denktas said it was seen that the two peoples could live side by side in their own administrations.
Denktas stated that the issues of property should be sorted out realistically and on a fair basis, and the way of doing that was known and that measures could be taken to make it easier.
''There should be good will. The intention of the Greek Cypriot side to date was to do the things it could not do by use of force, by bringing such fake formulas and by getting help from EU under the fake title of 'Cyprus government.' They should understand that Turkish Cypriot people who were not deceived by this game for 40 years, won't deceived by this game in the future, too,'' Denktas said.
