2 Palestinians injured by Israeli gunfire in W. Bank

RAMALLAH (AA) – Two Palestinians were wounded by Israeli army gunfire on Saturday during clashes near the West Bank town of Azzoun.

Dozens of demonstrators staged a protest near Azzoun's eastern gate – which has been shut for years by the Israeli authorities – to demand the gate open, Azzoun local council head Nemr Bidwan told The Anadolu Agency.

Israeli troops fired teargas and rubber bullets to disperse the protest, leaving two youths with head injuries, he said, adding that the injured were transferred to a hospital in Nablus for treatment.

Bidwan said that the Israeli closure of the town's eastern gate has tightened the noose on its residents and cost them major financial losses.

Israeli authorities could not be reached for a comment.

There has been heightened tension in Israel-occupied West Bank for several months now.
