Sunni tribal chief killed in Iraq

- Unknown assailants attack Sunni tribal chief in Shiite-majority area in northern Baghdad.

BAGHDAD (AA) – A Sunni tribal chief and 10 of his bodyguards were killed Friday in a Shiite-majority area in northern Baghdad, police said.

“Unknown assailants attacked the convoy of al-Janabat tribe’s Sheikh Kasim Sweidan on al-Kanah road in al-Shaab area,” police told The Anadolu Agency.

Security forces launched an investigation into the incident.

Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi had lifted Baghdad’s eight-year curfew on Feb. 7.

Iraq has been gripped by a security vacuum since June 2014 when Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant militants stormed the northern province of Mosul and declared a self-styled caliphate in parts of Iraq and Syria.
