Algeria kills 2 militants on Mali border: Security source

ALGIERS – The Algerian army on late Tuesday killed two militants on the border with Mali, an Algerian security source has said.

The two slain militants, he added, were believed to be members of the Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb organization.

The source, who requested anonymity, noted that the army had also managed to seize a car from the militants.

According to the source, the two militants had tried to enter Algeria from Mali and steal a car from an Algerian automobile company before driving it back to Mali.

The source added that the pair had carried Russian-made machineguns and large amounts of ammunition.

Algeria has deployed tens of thousands of troops to police its borders with both Mali and Libya.
