Last bird flu ban lifted in Netherlands

THE HAGUE - The last measure taken to contain bird flu in Netherlands has been lifted in, State Secretary for Economic Affairs Sharon Dijksma said in a statement on Saturday.

A bird flu outbreak came out in a poultry farm of Utrecht in mid-Nov. 2014, pushing the Dutch and EU authorities to take measures to prevent any further spread of the disease.

Earlier, the ban on poultry was relaxed in January; however, the Dutch administration chose to stay vigilant.

Dijksma said there were no new cases reported since the end of November and indoors confinement for commercial poultry industry was over as of Sunday midnight, which was the last ban that remained.

More than 250,000 poultry were destroyed due to H5N8 strain, as the outbreak made loss of millions of euros for producers.
