4 killed in 1st-ever Boko Haram attack in Niger

NIAMEY – Four people were killed on Friday in an attack by Boko Haram militants on the Nigerien town of Bosso on the border with Nigeria – the group's first such attack in Niger.

"Four fatalities have been registered," Dr. Ayayi Youssoufa, head of the Bosso Medical Center, told The Anadolu Agency.

He said Boko Haram militants had opened fire on an aircraft in the town without causing casualties.

According to Nigerien state television, the violence resulted in "heavy damage."

Friday's attack comes three days before a planned parliamentary session convened to discuss proposals for deploying Nigerien troops to neighboring Nigeria to fight alongside a regional anti-Boko Haram coalition.

For the last five years, Nigeria has battled a fierce Boko Haram insurgency that has ravaged the country's volatile northeast and claimed thousands of lives.

In recent months, the militant group has stepped up its attacks on Nigeria's border area with neighboring Cameroon.

Both Cameroon and Chad recently deployed troops to fight Boko Haram militants near their borders with Nigeria.
