Five Ukrainian soldiers killed in past 24 hours

KIEV - Five Ukrainian soldiers were killed and 30 others were wounded in clashes with armed pro-Russian separatists in the past 24 hours, officials said Monday.

Andrei Lysenko, spokesman for Ukraine’s "anti-terrorist" operations headquarters, said the fighting intensified in the towns of Sanzharovka, Uglegorsk and Debaltsevo in Donetsk, but he indicated that government forces were in control of the area.

Lysenko also said that the separatists do not want to maintain peace in the eastern part of the country and have rejected to abide by the 2014 Minsk agreement.

More than 5,000 people have lost their lives since the conflict between the Ukrainian military and pro-Russian separatists began in April 2014, according to the UN.
