CAIRO – Egypt reported a new bird flu death on Monday, the fifth fatality from the virus this year.

A 6-year-old child succumbed to the virus in the Upper Egyptian province of Minya, the Health Ministry said in a statement.

The new fatality brings to five the number of people died from the virus in 2005.

Although the virus is generally confined to poultry, some strains – potentially fatal – can infect humans as well.

The virus has caused numerous deaths in over 15 countries, especially Indonesia, Egypt and Vietnam.
