KABUL, Afghanistan (AA) – At least six Taliban militants were killed and three others injured late Wednesday by a U.S. drone strike near Afghanistan’s border with Pakistan, said Afghan officials.

The strike targeted militant sanctuaries in the Lal Pur district of the eastern Nangarhar province, said provincial police spokesman, Hazrat Hussain Mashriqiwal. No civilian casualty was reported.

“Reportedly a group commander was among the killed assailants and those injured were in serious condition,” Mashriqiwal told The Anadolu Agency.

It was the third airstrike by NATO and U.S. forces since the end of their combat mission in Afghanistan on Dec. 31 2014.

NATO-led international security forces have intensified drone strikes against Taliban and al-Qaeda linked militants in Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan in recent months.

The strikes come as Afghanistan, Pakistan and U.S.-led international security forces agreed to launch a trilateral operation against Taliban militants on both sides of the Afghan-Pak border.
