Egypt's Sisi to visit Kuwait next week

The visit's duration had not been specified

DOHA (AA) – Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi will kick off an official visit to Kuwait on Monday, his first since he took office last year.

Al-Sisi is scheduled to hold talks with Kuwait's Emir Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah on bilateral relations and regional issues of mutual interest, Kuwait's official news agency reported on Friday.

The visit's duration had not been specified.

Kuwait had been among the first Arab states to support the Egyptian government which followed the military's ouster of Mohamed Morsi, the country's first freely elected president and Muslim Brotherhood leader, in the summer of 2013 following massive protests against his rule.

Since Morsi's ouster, Kuwait has provided Egypt with $4 billion worth of financial assistance: $2 billion had been deposited at Egypt's central bank, $1 billion worth of petroleum products and an additional $1 billion grant.

The Egyptian presidency has yet to formally announce al-Sisi's visit.

However, the former general, who won a presidential election last May, had said during a recent meeting with editors-in-chief of the country's three state-run newspapers that he will visit Kuwait on January 5.
