Trials halted in Switzerland after volunteers report side effects

GENEVA - Swiss researchers have suspended the trial of an Ebola vaccine due to unexpected side effects.

The University of Geneva Hospital said on Thursday that the trial had been halted after volunteers complained they had experienced pain in their joints.

Four people said they had suffered pain in their hands and feet, hospital officials said.

The trial will resume in January, they added.

Two kinds of vaccines are being tested in humans in several countries.

The death toll from the Ebola outbreak has increased to 6,388 out of 17,942 cases of infection in the three affected West African countries - Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone - according to the World Health Organization.
