Kuwaiti emir returns home from Iran

DOHA – Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah returned home on Monday after a two-day visit to Iran.

He was welcomed at the airport by senior Kuwaiti officials, including Crown Prince Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jabir Al-Sabah and National Assembly Speaker Marzooq Ali al-Ghanem.

Before departing Iran, the Kuwaiti emir met with Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khomenei.

According to Kuwait's official news agency, the two sides held cordial discussions in an atmosphere reflective of "the spirit of friendship and depth of the ties bonding the two friendly nations and peoples."

Talks also focused on means of bolstering bilateral cooperation, the news agency said.

Sheikh Sabah's visit to Iran was his first since assuming power in Kuwait eight years ago.

Sheikh Sabah visited Shiite-majority Iran in 1979 following that country's Islamic Revolution, when he had been serving as Kuwait's deputy prime minister and foreign minister.

He visited the Islamic Republic again in 2003 for talks with Iranian officials in the run-up to the U.S.-led invasion and occupation of Iraq.
