Estonian President Calls For Swift Accession Talks With Turkey For EU Bid

TALLINN - Estonian president said Friday he would like to see a swift pace of accession talks for Turkey to become a member of the European Union, describing Turkey`s EU membership as "a need."

"A prolonged period of negotiations is not in our interest. What serves our interest is that Turkey becomes an EU member as soon as possible. We do not understand why negotiations are going so slowly in spite of the fact that Turkey is ahead of many countries in terms of the progress it had made," Toomas Hendrik Olves told a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart.

Ilves said Turkey was one of the countries which extended great support for Estonia`s membership in NATO. "We are very grateful for your help," he said.
